MOSCOW, December 26. /TASS/. Russia will make a one-time voluntary contribution of 1 million euro to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), according to an executive order.

The document says that the goal of the payment is to ensure the representation of Russian staffers in the convention’s secretariat. This, in turn, will help to promote Russia’s interests in the climate change domain.

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) came into force on March 21, 1994. The ultimate objective of the Convention is to stabilize greenhouse gas emissions "at a level that would prevent dangerous anthropogenic interference with the climate system." However, the convention outlines only basic principles of such an effort. A total of 197 countries and territories have ratified the Convention so far.
