MOSCOW, November 26. /TASS/. The Norilsk Nickel Company (Nornickel) created the country's biggest permafrost monitoring system that unites hundreds of wells under buildings where sensors monitor the soil stability, the company's Vice President for Environment and HSE Stanislav Seleznev told TASS.

"Buildings and structures are at risk of melting permafrost soils," he said. "To prevent this, two years ago we started deploying a monitoring system. Today it is, I must say, the largest permafrost monitoring system in Russia that consists of sensors in hundreds of drilled wells, where temperature under buildings and many other indicators are recorded. We have also created an operational service to respond to those signals."

The company has adjusted approaches to design of new buildings and structures. Current projects assume there will be no permafrost under buildings or it will go deeper, he added.
