EU pays 1.5-year high for Russian pipeline gas in September

EU countries paid 839.9 mln euro for Russian pipeline gas in September, up by 30% month-on-month and by 36% year-on-year

MOSCOW, November 19. /TASS/. The European Union purchased Russian pipeline gas in September for 840 mln euro, which is the highest amount since February 2023, according to the Eurostat statistical agency and TASS calculations. LNG imports from Russia in value terms was the highest since April 2024.

EU countries paid 839.9 mln euro for Russian pipeline gas in September, up by 30% month-on-month and by 36% year-on-year. This is the highest amount since February 2023 when more than 1 bln euro were spent on payment for supplies of Russian pipeline gas. Among leading purchasers were Italy (315.5 mln euro, the highest level since January 2023), Hungary (219.6 mln euro, the highest level since this January), Greece (166.9 mln euro, the highest level since September 2023), and Slovakia (125.5 mln euro, the highest level in 2024). No figures on Austria were disclosed.

EU in September also imported Russian LNG worth 547.8 mln euro, the highest level since April 2024. France, Belgium and the Netherlands were the key importers, with 215.7 mln euro, 130.5 mln euro and 93.5 mln euro spent, respectively. Spain’s LNG purchases from Russia fell almost two-fold compared with August to 73.1 mln euro.

In all, the European Union paid 5.4 bln euro for Russian pipeline gas in 9M 2024 compared with 6.3 bln euro in the same period last year. The share of gas supplies from Russia in total volume of Europe’s gas imports from countries outside the Union rose to 25.6% in September from 17.4% in the previous month.

LNG supplies from Russia totaled 4.9 bln euro in January-September compared with 6.2 bln euro in the previous year. The share of Russian LNG went up to 21% from 15%.
