According to the company's Vice President for Environment and HSE Stanislav Seleznev, the project may appear within three years

MOSCOW, November 19. /TASS/. The Norilsk Nickel Company (Nornickel) eyes launching a climate project in the Krasnoyarsk Region's forests. The project may appear within three years, and its main aspect is efficiency, the company's Vice President for Environment and HSE Stanislav Seleznev told TASS.

"We want to have own project to generate carbon units," he said. "We want to sell carbon units, not to buy them. We have been working on this issue. Projects of the kind may be implemented within three years. Everything here depends on relevancy. Most likely, this project may be in the Krasnoyarsk Region, rich in forests. It may be launched also in the Trans-Baikal Region."

If the market develops and the company sees carbon units are actively sold and bought there, then Norilsk Nickel will decide whether its own carbon project is possible, he continued. For that, the company would need an area in the taiga, would need to calculate expenses and to see possible prices of carbon units to sell.

"If the sale of these units generates income, then it's worth it. Secondly, we may account for these carbon units for ourselves. I would not eye the carbon sector beyond an economic component," he concluded.
