Baku, Astana, Tashkent sign agreement on partnership in transmission of green energy

BAKU, November 13. /TASS/. Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan have signed an intergovernmental agreement on strategic partnership in the development and transmission of green energy, according to a statement published on the website of President of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
The document was inked by heads of the three countries, Ilham Aliyev, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and Shavkat Mirziyoyev, on the sidelines of the UN Climate Change Conference (COP 29) that is taking place in Baku.
On May 1, 2024, ministers of economy and energy of Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan signed a memorandum of cooperation on integration of energy systems of the three countries. The memorandum stipulates that the participants intend to explore the possibilities of linking energy systems through laying a high-voltage cable through the Caspian Sea and on the territory of other countries with conducting the best from the technical and economic viewpoints trade in green energy from Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. The document also targets sale of green energy to EU countries.
On August 6, Deputy Energy Minister of Azerbaijan Orkhan Zeynalov said at the first meeting of energy ministers of Central Asian countries in Astana that Baku, Astana and Tashkent had reached an agreement to set up a joint venture for implementation of a project to export green energy from Central Asian countries to Europe.
Uzbekistan’s Deputy Energy Minister Umid Mamadaminov said earlier that the republic planned to export surplus of green electricity produced in Uzbekistan to Europe starting from 2030. He noted that Tashkent together with Baku and Astana participated in the project of the ‘green cable corridor’, through which those countries intended to supply environmentally sound electricity to Europe. The project’s participants are interested much in its implementation, which will enable them to export green electricity to Europe to reach its carbon reduction goals, the official stressed.
He also noted that Uzbekistan within the Paris Agreement assumed obligations to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 35% by 2030. For that purpose, the republic addresses integration of renewable sources of energy, as well as reforms in the area of energy efficiency for large macro-sized enterprises and households are being implemented.
