Finland cuts imports from Russia by more than a quarter annually in 9M 2024

HELSINKI, November 7. /TASS/. Finland’s imports of goods from Russia totaled 552 mln euro in nine months of this year, which is 26.1% less than in the like period of the last year, the Finnish Customs told TASS.

"Two-three freight trains are now coming to Finland via the Vainikkala border crossing. Urea, ammonia and nickel powder were mainly imported by rail from the start of 2024," the Customs said. Imports from Russia totaled 552.7 mln euro from January to September 2024, of which 436.2 mln euro are for the nickel ore, concentrates and other products for nickel production, supplied by Russian Norilsk Nickel to its Finnish unit in the city of Harjavalta, the customs spokesperson said.

Russia also supplied machinery, engines and power plants amounting to 50.5 mln euro, inorganic chemical elements worth 44.1 mln euro, commercial fertilizers totaling 13 mln euro, liquefied propane and butane worth 3.1 mln euro, and animal and vegetable facts to the amount of 1.5 mln euro to Finland.

Export of Finnish goods to Russia totaled about 275 mln euro in nine months of 2024. Copper ore and concentrates are the main commodity group in value terms. Chemicals, coloring and tanning agents are also exported.

Imports and exports declined in value terms against the like period of the 2023, the Customs informed. The decline was 26.1% for imports from Russia and 39.2% for exports to Russia. The total trade turnover between the countries plummeted by 30.3% annually within nine months of this year.
