Net currency sales of top Russian exporters gain 16% in March

Net purchases of foreign currency by households totaled $1.7 bln in March, with the dollar and the euro accounting for 81% of purchases

MOSCOW, April 8. /TASS/. Net currency sales of top twenty-nine Russian exporters surged by 16% month on month in March 2024 to $12.1 bln, according to the financial market risk review posted on the website of the Bank of Russia.

Additional currency supply was provided by yuan sales by the Bank of Russia as part of mirroring operations of the National Wealth Fund. Monetary conditions remaining tough also supported the ruble.

Net purchases of foreign currency by households totaled 155.5 bln rubles ($1.7 bln) in March, compared to 103.2 bln rubles ($1.12 bln). The dollar and the euro accounted for 81% of purchases.

The demand of nonresident banks for foreign currency in the exchange and over-the-counter (OTC) market amounted to 564.8 bln rubles ($6.2 bln), while it stood at 531 bln rubles or $5.8 bln) in February of this year. Credit institutions not categorized as systemic ones remained one of main categories of net buyers of foreign currency on the exchange. Their net purchases in March dropped by almost a third from 361.6 bln rubles ($3.93 bln) in February to 244.6 bln ($2.67 bln).
