Bangladesh interested in expanding Rooppur nuclear power plant — Rosatom
The physical start-up of unit 1 of the Rooppur NPP should take place before the end of this year, Rosatom head Alexey Likhachev said
MOSCOW, April 2. /TASS/. Bangladesh is interested in building two more power units at the Rooppur nuclear power plant site, the press service of Atomstroyexport, the engineering division of Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom, reported.
"The implementation of the Rooppur NPP construction project is closing in on a key milestone - the physical start-up of unit 1, which should take place before the end of this year. We are now starting to discuss new projects. The Bengal side has expressed great interest in the construction of two more power units at the site of the Rooppur nuclear power plant," the press service cites Rosatom head Alexey Likhachev, who was speaking after a working meeting with the Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina.
According to him, the possibility of building a multi-purpose high-powered research reactor in Bangladesh that will advance the field of science and nuclear medicine is also under consideration.
The first Bangladeshi nuclear power plant, the Russian-designed Rooppur, is being built 160 km west of the Bangladeshi capital of Dhaka. It will be equipped with two power units with VVER-1200 reactors with a total capacity of 2,400 MW. The Russian design for the site was earlier successfully implemented at the Novovoronezh NPP. This generation III+ plant is a leap in technology, which fully meets international safety requirements.
