Russia, Nicaragua to cooperate in development of peaceful nuclear technologies

MOSCOW, March 11. /TASS/. Russia will cooperate with Nicaragua in the development of non-power applications of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, including training personnel for the republic’s government agency for nuclear safety, according to an intergovernmental agreement published on the official portal of legal information.
Cooperation will cover a wide range of areas: increasing public awareness of nuclear technologies, developing the nuclear infrastructure of the republic of Nicaragua, non-power applications of nuclear energy in industry, agriculture, ecology, science and medicine.
In particular, the parties will study the possibility of building a nuclear science and technology center in Nicaragua. The parties also plan to organize technical tours and workshops, training and education of specialists, including personnel of the nuclear and radiation safety regulator of the republic of Nicaragua.
There is a requirement not to use nuclear materials and technologies received from Russia in accordance with the agreement for the production of nuclear weapons and other nuclear explosive devices or to achieve any military purpose. Technologies and installations for the chemical reprocessing of irradiated nuclear fuel, uranium enrichment and production of heavy water, uranium enriched to 20% or higher in uranium-235, plutonium and heavy water will not be transferred to Nicaragua.
The agreement was signed in March 2023, but its contents became known only on Monday.
