The network will have 5 to 7 scientific stations

YAKUTSK, December 13. /TASS/. The Russian Geographical Society's branch in Yakutia plans to organize a network of scientific stations in hard-to-reach understudied locations, the branch's leader Alexander Gorokhov told TASS.

"We have an idea to organize a network of scientific stations. Right now [there are] two scientific facilities, two stations. The first one is on Lake Labynkyr, thanks to our colleagues from the Oymyakon Branch. <…> This year, a big group of students has conducted studies there. The second station has been organized on the Bennett Island. In 2022, an expedition installed a station there - a rescue depo in the form of a Yakut dwelling - balagan," he said.

The network will have 5 to 7 scientific stations, where research organizations and scientific authorities could cooperate, he added.

Lake Labynkyr is an attraction in the Oymyakon District. The understudied lake is located 1,020 m above sea level.

The Bennett Island is one of the most hard-to-reach islands. It is located almost 1,000 km northeast of Tiksi. It is part of the De Long Islands in the East Siberian Sea. The island was discovered almost a century and a half ago. Yakutia's branch has supported an expedition on inflatable catamarans to the Bennett Island. It was led by Russia's outstanding polar explorer Nikolay Nakhodkin.
