IAEA experts examine Zapororzhye NPP’s turbine halls, find no military equipment there
It is reported that additional access will be required to fully assess the availability of items that may affect nuclear safety
VIENNA, December 8. /TASS/. Experts of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) have examined turbine halls of the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) and found no mines or military equipment there.
"Today, the IAEA team conducted a walkdown of the turbine halls of all six reactor units. The experts did not observe any mines, explosives, military equipment or vehicles in the areas they visited. Not all parts of the turbine halls were accessed so additional access would be required to fully assess whether there were any items present that could potentially impact nuclear safety," the agency said in a statement.
Addressing a UN Security Council session on May 30, IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi put forward five security principles for the ZNPP: there should be no attack of any kind from or against the plant; ZNPP should not be used as storage or a base for heavy weapons or military personnel that could be used for an attack from the plant; off-site supply of power to the plant should not be put at risk; all structures, systems and components essential to the safe and secure operation of ZNPP should be protected from attacks or acts of sabotage; and, finally, no action should be taken that undermines these principles. Russian Permanent Representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzya said measures taken by Moscow are consistent with these principles.
