According to Alexey Likhachev, the situation in the nuclear power plant’s vicinity remains tense but all the necessary measures have been taken to protect the site

MOSCOW, November 28. /TASS/. The condition of the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant’s (ZNPP) power units is not a cause for concern, Alexey Likhachev, CEO of Russia’s Rosatom State Atomic Energy Corporation, said.

"We are not worried about the condition of power units at the Zaporozhye NPP," he noted, addressing the Primakov Readings international forum.

"An IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency - TASS) mission has been stationed at the facility since last September. We discuss current issues with Mr. Grossi (IAEA director general - TASS) on a regular basis. IAEA experts have questions and senior officials at the nuclear plant provide answers to them. This monitoring and supervision activity is carried out in real time," Likhachev stressed. According to him, the situation in the nuclear power plant’s vicinity remains tense but all the necessary measures have been taken to protect the site, particularly by Russia’s National Guard and the Defense Ministry.

The Rosatom chief went on to say that all six of the plant’s power units were currently in shutdown mode and would not begin generating power any time soon.

Likhachev added that if the power plant was to be put back into operation, this process would be coordinated with the IAEA. "Many issues need to be resolved to make this happen, including the issue of power supplies and the need to eliminate military threats, [but once this is done,] we will carry out this process together with the IAEA and, of course, Russia’s state regulatory agency," Likhachev specified.

The six-reactor, six-gigawatt Zaporozhye NPP, located in Energodar, is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe. Russian forces took control of the facility in late February 2022.

The Ninth Primakov Readings international research and expert forum, themed Postglobalization Horizons, is taking place in Moscow on November 27-28. TASS is the general information partner of the event.
