Arctic Children's Games in Yakutsk planned for 2024
School students will compete, among other sports, in the Evenki game - northern football
YAKUTSK, November 15. /TASS/. The Arctic Children's Games among school students will be held in Yakutsk in 2024, Dmitry Sergeev of Yakutia's Modun center for national sports told TASS.
"The Arctic Children's Games will be held in Yakutsk in 2024. School students will compete, among other sports, in the Evenki game - northern football. A leather ball is filled with deer wool. There are two types of Evenki football - when teams have three or five players. The gate is triangular - it repeats the form of an urasa (a traditional Yakut dwelling - TASS)," the center's representative said.
The North's modern national sports originate from the lifestyle of the indigenous peoples' ancestors and are closely related to hunting and reindeer husbandry. "Competitions in the northern sports include jumping over sleds, running on wide skis, northern wrestling on the snow," he added.
To survive in the tundra, the North's people must drive reindeer skillfully. "Children compete in lariat throwing. The lariat is a special rope for catching deer. It is woven of a few thin buckskin straps", he said.
