UN not going to withdraw from food export memorandum — Russian mission to UN
"We constantly encounter that the UN offers certain schemes but when it comes to practical implementation by the Western countries, they do not work," Dmitry Polyansky said
MOSCOW, October 23. /TASS/. The United Nations confirms it does not intend to unilaterally withdraw from the memorandum of understanding with Russia on facilitation to exports of Russian food and fertilizer, First Deputy Permanent Representative of Russia with the UN Dmitry Polyansky said at a videoconference.
"UN repeatedly confirmed it does not intend to unilaterally withdraw from it [the memorandum]," the diplomat said. "Our counterparts in the UN understand full well why all that [Russia’s withdrawal from the grain deal] occurred and do not deny, including UN Secretary General [Antonio Guterres] the fact that promises given to Russia, guarantees for access of our food and fertilizer to markets were not fulfilled," he noted.
"Another point is that the UN does not have enough levers to influence Western countries, That’s why they [the UN - TASS], certainly, attempt to present the matter in a way that something still can be done, that there are some junctures where the solution can be found," Polyansky noted. "Nothing occurs in reality. We constantly encounter that the UN offers certain schemes but when it comes to practical implementation by the Western countries, they do not work," he said.
"The UN knows full well that unless some radical change occurs in the attitude of Western countries towards performance of the memorandum of the global organization with Russia in recent conditions, there are no grounds to demand from us or request us to return to the grain deal," the diplomat said.
