Ethiopia sees no problems for introduction of Mir payment system — Ambassador
The Ambassador of the Republic to Russia, Cham Ugala Uriat, noted that the implementation of Mir will help smooth out difficulties in financial transactions caused by sanctions against the Russian Federation
MOSCOW, September 26. /TASS/. Ethiopia sees no problem in introducing Russia’s Mir payment system in the future, says Ethiopian Ambassador to Russia Cham Ugala Uriat.
According to the envoy, the introduction of the Mir system to the Ethiopian banking system will make it possible to smooth out complications in financial operations, caused by sanctions against Russia.
"I hope this will be the case, because Ethiopia is about to become a BRICS member state. Recently, the BRICS made a decision [during the summit] in South Africa that member states can make transactions in national currencies. This may become a reality in the future, and there will be no problems with introducing the Mir payment system in Ethiopia," the envoy noted.
Meanwhile, the diplomat did not specify a concrete timeframe for that.
"First, I believe, the responsible bodies both on Ethiopian and Russian side, meaning Ministries of Finance or national banks, will have to hold negotiations and set up a timeframe for that to happen. There is an interest for that and there are no obstructions, but I am unable to name any specific timeframe for implementation of this project. But I hope that this will happen in the future," the envoy said.
