No grounds to unblock Twitter as of now — Russian watchdog
Twitter’s administration still has not deleted 1,300 prohibited materials, according to the regulator
MOSCOW, April 10. /TASS/. The Russian Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology, and Mass Media (Roskomnadzor) does not see any grounds to unblock Twitter, the watchdog’s press service told TASS on Monday.
Anton Gorelkin, the deputy head of the information policy committee in the State Duma, the lower house of the Russian parliament, previously suggested the possibility of lifting the Twitter ban in response to Russian authorities’ accounts being restored by the social network.
"There are currently no grounds for lifting restrictions on foreign services," the press service noted.
Twitter’s administration still has not deleted 1,300 prohibited materials, according to the regulator. In addition to child pornography, drug and suicidal content, these posts contain calls for participation in mass disturbances, messages about extremist organizations as well as fake news, especially about the special military operation. "The social network also continues spreading other destructive content which contradicts traditional Russian spiritual and moral values," the watchdog added.
Russian users have no shortage of "opportunities to obtain information and communicate owing to popular domestic social platforms," the press service noted.
On Friday, Twitter reinstated the accounts of the Kremlin, the Russian foreign, defense, and other ministries, as well as Russian embassies abroad. Access to twitter.com was restricted in Russia on the basis of the decision of the Russian Office of the General Prosecutor dated February 24, 2022.
