Russian container market sees 15.8% decline in 10M 2022, Fesco says

Domestic transportation in October 2022 dropped by 3% annually but had an upsurge by 3% against this September

MOSCOW, November 25. /TASS/. The Russian container market fell by 15.8% year-on-year in January - October 2022 to 4.55 mln TEU [20-ft container equivalent - TASS], the Fesco shipping group’s press service said on Friday.

Exports lost 14% to 1.692 mln TEU. Domestic transportation rose by 1% to 919,000 TEU. Furthermore, transit fell by 23% to 622,000 TEU and imports scaled down by 14% to 1.692 mln TEU.

In October 2022, the container market moved downward by 16.3% to 471,000 TEU, Fesco noted. "As of the end of October 2022, the market contracted by 16.3% against the like month of the last year to 471,000 TEU," the press service informed.

The export freight traffic figures tumbled 30% in October, with the twofold increase in shipments through the ports of the Russian Far East. Import transportation moved down by 6% annually yet gained 12% against September 2022. Transit carriage declined by 29% against last October. "Carriage to the Republic of Belarus via the Russian Far East surged by 122% vs. the like month of the last year," Fesco said.

The Russian container market comprises foreign trade and transit container turnover of Russian ports, foreign trade and transit container turnover of Russian Railways’ border crossings, domestic container carriage by Russian Railways and coastal traffic.
