Floods jeopardize Pakistan’s food security — expert
It is reported that these floods ruined all the cultivation land
ISLAMABAD, October 20. /TASS/. Pakistan has faced threats in the food security sphere before floods and natural disasters have just made the situation worse, Research Associate at the Institute of Strategic Studies, Islamabad (ISSI) Muhammad Taimur Fahad Khan told TASS in an interview on Thursday.
"Even before the floods happened in August, Pakistan’s grain reserves had thus been depleting at a very fast rate because we have a burgeoning population. And our reserves had also been decreasing due to degradation of soil, the weather conditions, other climate changes that are taking place, surrounding us. So, we are already facing an acute problem of food insecurity," the expert said. Floods in the country exacerbated Islamabad’s concerns in this regard, he noted.
"In Pakistan October is the month in which wheat is cultivated," Fahad Khan said. "These floods ruined all the cultivation land for us. So Pakistan will not be able to cultivate the amount of wheat that it was supposed to during pre-flood times," the expert added.
