The EAEU is progressing to complete self-sufficiency in terms of food security

MOSCOW, August 26. /TASS/. The level of food self-sufficiency in the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) is 93% at the moment and there is a room to grow further, official spokesperson of the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC) said at the briefing this Friday.

"We have a fairly high level of food self-provisioning. According to estimates of our experts, this level reaches 93% at the moment. Even if we speak by countries, then certainly depends also on environmental and climatic conditions but figures in general cannot but give grounds for respect and show at the same time that we have the growth upside," Iya Malkina said.

"For example, Belarus supports itself with foodstuffs by 94%, the Russian Federation - by 90%, Kazakhstan - 83%, and Kyrgyzstan - 81%. Considering certain specific features… this level is 73% in Armenia. However, we have the potential in aggregate to protect the domestic market from any shocks," she said.

The EAEU is progressing to complete self-sufficiency in terms of food security, the EEC spokesperson said. "Furthermore, I would like to say figures showed to us by statistics for the first six months of this year give confidence that we are moving to complete self-sufficiency. In particular, the agricultural output in businesses of all categories gained more than 1.5% year-on-year. In money terms, the amount stands at $39 bln," she added.
