Hainan's Yangpu Port will launch four new infrastructure projects in 2022
The port's international container terminal business has been growing steadily since the beginning of 2022, according to the Hainan International Communication Network (HICN)
HAIKOU /China/, June 13. /TASS/. Implementation of four new waterway infrastructure projects will start in 2022 in Yangpu Economic Development Zone of Danzhou city in the southern Chinese province of Hainan. This is reported by the Hainan International Communication Network (HICN).
They include the project to expand the international container hub of Yangpu Port, the modernization and expansion of waterways in the region, as well as the petrochemical terminal project with a capacity of up to 30 thousand tons near the port of Shentou. Together, all of these projects should increase Yangpu Port's throughput capacity and expand the region's transportation potential.
Since the beginning of this year, the Yangpu Port International Container Terminal has been steadily increasing its business volume, according to the article. By May 20, its daily throughput exceeded 7,62,000 TEUs (the equivalent of a standard 20-foot container), a daily record for the port.
In recent years, the port administration has done a great deal to modernize and automate its infrastructure. By the end of the first quarter, the total number of shipping routes of the port reached 39. Of these, 18 are international routes, and the rest are domestic. They mainly cover coastal cities in China itself, as well as major ports in Southeast Asia. There are 33 international ships registered at the port.
According to the publication, Yangpu Port is ramping up coordination with various port and shipping companies to increase the number of routes to 43 in 2022, which will include the West Coast of the United States, among others.
Yangpu Port's container cargo turnover exceeded 500,000 TEUs (the equivalent of a standard 20-foot container) in January-April this year, an increase of 47.9% over the same period in 2021, according to official data.
In 2021, the port's total container cargo turnover was 1.3 million TEUs, an increase of 29.33% over 2020. It ranked first among Chinese ports with a container turnover of more than 1 million TEU last year.
Yangpu Port development
Hainan authorities place great emphasis on building Yangpu Port's infrastructure in order to expand both domestic and overseas cargo traffic, which is an important part of the province's free trade port project. Work is underway to prepare Yangpu Port to meet the requirements for future cargo traffic of about 10 million TEU annually.
The Chinese authorities intend to turn Yangpu Port in the northwestern part of the Hainan Island into a key distribution point for the flow of goods from various regions of the PRC to Southeast Asia and Oceania, Europe and North America by 2035. Yangpu Port will play an important role in implementing the plan to form a new integrated maritime and land corrido. This is the National Development and Reform Commission’s project aimed at accelerating and improving the efficiency of regional and global trade and economic projects and providing advanced customs and logistics services.
It should become a regional transportation hub by 2025, capable of transporting up to 5 million containers per year and increasing its number of internal and external routes to more than 80.
