Bank of Russia eases rules for banks to sell foreign currency to citizens from May 20
Banks will be able to sell any foreign currency in cash, without restrictions to citizens, except for US dollars and euros
MOSCOW, May 19. /TASS/. Russian banks are allowed to sell foreign currency in cash to individuals without restrictions, with the exception of euros and dollars, from May 20. For dollars and euros a special procedure will remain in place until September 9, the regulator’s press service reported on Thursday.
"From May 20, 2022, banks will be able to sell any foreign currency in cash, without restrictions to citizens, except for US dollars and euros. The current restrictions on the sale of cash US dollars and euros remain until September 9, 2022, citizens can only buy those US dollars and euros, which arrived at the cash desks of banks starting from April 9, 2022," the statement says.
Previously, these restrictions applied to all types of cash currency, the Bank of Russia specified.
"[The regulator’s] permission to sell any currency other than the US dollar and the euro without restriction is due to the fact that banks have balances of foreign banknotes," the press service added.
In March, amid high volatility of the ruble exchange rate, the Bank of Russia decided to limit the ability of banks to sell cash to citizens. From April 18, the regulator eased the restrictions, and for the period until September 9, banks received the right to sell cash to citizens, but only the one that came to the cash desks of banks from April 9.
