HAIKOU /China/, March 7. /TASS/. Hainan’s Haikou Meilan International Airport’s second terminal was named a 5-Star Airport Terminal by Skytrax, an international air transport rating organization based in the United Kingdom, according to the Hainan International Communication Network (HICN).

This terminal was put into operation on December 2, 2021. Its total area is almost 300 thousand square meters. The terminal is designed so that from the security check of passengers to the farthest exit to board in a clean area will not have to walk more than five and a half minutes.

The terminal is equipped with 110 check-in counters, automatic check-in and baggage drop-off counters, as well as the most advanced equipment, including facial recognition technology, which will speed up the passenger service process. All the necessary transport infrastructure is in place, as well as a parking lot for 3.7 thousand cars on an area of about 170 thousand square meters.

All this new infrastructure will increase total annual passenger traffic up to 45 million people and the volume of cargo up to 600 thousand tons. It is also planned to increase international passenger traffic from 8 million to 10 million people annually. In 2021, according to official data, Meilan Airport served more than 17.51 million passengers, an increase of 6.24% over 2020.
