Hainan Biology Laboratory implements mechanism to prioritize selective breeding projects
The new mechanism will also make it possible to plan funding based on the success of the projects
HAIKOU /China/, Dec. 3. /TASS/. The Sanya Selective Breeding Research Laboratory on Hainan Island announced that it implementated a new resource allocation system for in-demand agricultural products, which are created through selectively breeding high-quality animal and plant varieties. The Sanya Daily newspaper reported that the mechanism will allow to prioritize and plan financing based on the success of various projects.
According to the newspaper, the experimental laboratory located on the territory of Yazhouwan Science City will pay more attention to in-demand products and freeze ineffective inventions in accordance with this new program. Research is now expected to benefit the industry and agriculture much more than before. This, in particular, will be facilitated by the targeted use of the research base, which dictates the speed of work in key areas of scientific activity.
The center's first batch of promising projects was announced at a recent ceremony dedicated to stimulating cutting-edge research. The announced list included 75 important inventions in nine areas. "We are the first in China to implement such a mechanism, <...> it will allow us to optimally focus public resources in plant breeding," said Qian Qian, head of the laboratory's scientific committee and member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
As he specified, the breeding center's specialists will primarily focus on improving crops, the shortage of which is particularly acute in the country. One of the laboratory’s main tasks is to ensure the application of inventions in the real economy. It is expected that thanks to the new model, which provides for clear prioritization, Hainan will be able to constantly innovate while forming value chains (a process including design, production, marketing, distribution and after-sales service - TASS commentary).
Sanya is one of the key centers of economic development of the southernmost province of China, with a significant part of its income provided by the service sector. The island's administration plans to turn the city into a leading financial and economic center with advanced infrastructure, which will house the headquarters of major Chinese and foreign companies. This large population center, also known worldwide as a first-class resort, is transforming itself year after year, attracting the attention of more and more investors.
