According to the Hainan Daily newspaper, 17 more irrigation canals will be built in the future, which will solve the problem of water shortages at the base and greatly increase its ability to deal with possible floods

SANYA /China/, November 15. /TASS/. Chinese engineers have completed work on the Chitian hydrotechnical project in Hainan province. As the Hainan Daily reported, this irrigation system will serve China's Nanfan breeding base.

The Chitian Canal is the first new completed hydraulic project at the Nanfan base. Authorities plan to build 17 more irrigation canals here in the future, which will solve the problem of water shortages at the base and greatly increase its ability to deal with possible floods.

The introduction of the Chitian Hydroproject, the newspaper writes, has laid the foundation for the modernization of the Nanfan base irrigation system. High-yielding crops are grown on that base, which means that the need for water here is particularly acute.

Hainan’s Nanfan is located in the south of the island in Sanya City, Lingshui-Li and Ledong-Li autonomous counties. This place has natural advantages for the development of high-efficiency tropical agriculture because of the abundance of sunshine and tropical rainfall. Maracuya, pitaya (the so-called dragon fruit), coconut, pomelo, and many other tropical fruits are grown here.

China’s authorities pay great attention to the development of agriculture in the province of Hainan. For example, in 2020, the national government has provided 150 million yuan (about $22 million) for the development of the Nanfan breeding base.
