Foreign ships to be allowed to transport goods in Hainan's waters

An official believes that Hainan's free trade port has significant potential for development in this direction, given the geographical, economic and legislative advantages

HAIKOU, June 30. /TASS/. The Hainan authorities decided to allow foreign ships to transport goods and carry out offshore operations in the coastal areas of the island, reported "Zhongguo Xinwenwang" citing the provincial government.

The relevant regulation governing the operation of foreign ships in Hainan's free trade port will enter into force on September 1, 2021. According to deputy head of the Provincial Office of Maritime Affairs Wu Pingsheng, the regulation provides for the creation of a system for registering foreign ships different from mainland China. In particular, individuals will be allowed to register ships as well as use the ship's English name. This is the first time this practice will be introduced in China.

Zhao Zhidong, deputy head of the committee on legal work of the Provincial People's Congress (local legislature — TASS), pointed out that currently more than 80% of the world's products are transported by sea, and sea transportation has become the main industry of large free trade ports around the world. In this regard, the official believes that Hainan's free trade port has significant potential for development in this direction, given the geographical, economic and legislative advantages.
