HAIKOU, May 19. /TASS/. Farmers from the outskirts of Hainan's Haikou this year are bracing for a rich harvest of the volcanic lychee variety, known for its special taste and nutritional properties. According to the "Hainan Daily", farmers expect to collect at least 80,000 tonnes of this product - 7% higher than the previous year.

According to the newspaper, the first batches of these exotic fruits this season, about 14,800 tonnes, have already entered the market. For a more efficient sale of such agricultural products, the authorities have been holding the Volcanic Lychee Month campaign for the fourth year in a row. Several sales promotion events have been organized in the suburbs in the southeast of Haikou.

As the local administration clarified, one of the main tasks is to create effective channels to reach an interested consumer, increase the income and well-being of rural residents involved in lychee cultivation. More than 50 companies and cooperatives have applied for a volcanic brand promotion this year, according to official figures.

Found only in the Haikou region, the lychee variety got its name from the volcanic soil where it grows. According to experts, these fruits contain a large amount of glucose, sucrose, protein and carotene, are rich in vitamins and amino acids, and have a high content of calcium, selenium and phosphorus. The area of ​​plantations intended for this agricultural crop exceeds 7,300 hectares.
