Leading Chinese, Russian and Western media have begun to pay great attention to Hainan’s Free Trade Port in connection with a number of new measures taken by the local administration aimed at increasing globalization and increasing the economic openness of the southernmost region of China, according to "Hainan Daily» observers, who analyzed the flow of news over the recent months.
According to the newspaper, TASS, People's Daily, Xinhua, China Central Television, as well as Reuters, the Singaporean newspaper Lianhe Zaobao provide the most active coverage of events on the island. According to the analysis, among the topics that caught media attention most were the measures of the Hainan government to remove trade restrictions, the policy to attract national and foreign personnel, and a new investment strategy.

In June 2020, the Chinese government published a program for the development of Hainan's free trade port. According to this document, Hainan will be turned into a special customs zone. The country's authorities expect to generally complete the creation of the free port on the territory of the province by 2025: by this time, a system for ensuring free trade and investment should be built on the island.
By 2035, the free port and its model will tbecome more solid. By this time, it is planned to ensure freedom of trade and investment, cross-border movement of capital, people, and freight traffic on Hainan.
