The Russian PM added that the ideal way of Internet regulation would be through the approval of an international convention

MOSCOW, March 29. /TASS/. Russia does not plan to introduce a firewall Internet regulation system, like the one in China, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev stated during his online talk with users of the Russian social network VK.

"Of course, there won’t be the same regulation as in China. I would even say more: in China, this regulation does not bring the results that it aimed to achieve at the start. What is more, we do not strive towards such regulation. There will be no firewall here," Medvedev said, commenting upon the bill on Russian Internet regulation.

The Russian PM added that the ideal way of Internet regulation would be through the approval of an international convention. "However, this is not how the Internet appeared. The absolute majority of regulation keys are concentrated on the territory of one country - the United States of America. I do not mean to say that it is because we have bad relations with the Americans right now, or something of the kind. It just turns out that this now-universal technology used by billions of people is largely regulated by one country. This is not very good," Medvedev stated.

The Russian head of government noted that in the future, international conventions would regulate some key Internet technologies. "So far, there is no such thing. That is why we need to protect our interests, not because we want to shut down, but because we don’t want to be shut down, which is also a possibility," Medvedev concluded.
