Obstructing implementation of Nord Stream 2 is difficult, Poland’s PM admits
Mateusz Morawiecki said that the Polish side believes this project contradicts European norms
WARSAW, January 27. /TASS/. Halting construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline is not simple, considering that this project is implemented by Russia and Germany, Poland’s Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said in an interview with the Interia news portal.
"One should honestly say to himself: two strong states, where the first one, Russia, is a global power and the other one, Germany, is the fourth economy of the globe, decided to build a gas pipeline," Morawiecki noted.
The Polish side believes this project contradicts European norms, he said.
"We need allies that would clearly put forward this issue. We are trying to act for several years already in a way that the others also criticize this pipeline. However, let me return to the first thought - these are two strongest states. It is not simple to prevent them from anything," the Prime Minister added.
The Nord Stream 2 project includes construction of two gas pipeline lines with a total capacity of 55 bln cubic meters of gas per year from the coast of Russia through the Baltic Sea to Germany.
The pipeline is to bypass the transit states of Ukraine, Belarus, Poland and other Eastern European and Baltic countries. The cost of construction is estimated at 9.5 bln euro, the launch of the pipeline is expected before the end of 2019.
