Russian military base in South Ossetia alerted for snap readiness check
About 1,000 officers and men and 200 pieces of military equipment are involved in the snap check
MOSCOW, August 26. /TASS/. Russia’s military base in South Ossetia, participating in the snap check of the Russian armed forces readiness, has been placed on full combat alert, the press office of the Southern Military District said, adding that nearly 1,000 officers and men have been moved to a proving ground.
"The Southern Military District’s military base was put on the full combat alert in the process of the snap check. Its units performed a march from the permanent location to a high altitude proving ground," the report says.
Taking part in the tactical and special drills are mechanized infantry, armor, artillery and reconnaissance units.
"Participating in the snap check measures are about 1,000 officers and men and 200 pieces of military equipment," the news release runs.
The current combat readiness check began on August 25 and will last till the end of the month, with forces of the Southern Military District, some units of the Central and Western military districts and also the Northern Fleet, the aerospace force and airborne troops taking part. The snap check is part of preparations for the strategic exercise Kavkaz-2016 due in September.
