Russian submarine launches Kalibr cruise missile during Barents Sea trials
On Thursday, the Stary Oskol diesel-electric submarine also successfully launched a Kalibr cruise missile to hit a sea target
MOSCOW, May 6. /TASS /. The Stary Oskol diesel-electric submarine (project 636.3 Varshavyanka) has successfully launched a sea-based cruise missile of the Kalibr (NATO reporting name: SS-N-27 Sizzler) missile system during its trials with Russia’s Northern Fleet, fleet spokesman Vadim Serga said on Friday.
"The missile was launched from the underwater position at a Northern Fleet range in the Barents Sea. The costal target at the Chizha training range [in the Arkhangelsk Region in north Russia] was accurately hit," Serga said.
On Thursday, the submarine also successfully launched a Kalibr cruise missile to hit a sea target, he added.
In late 2015, another Project 636.3 diesel-electric submarine Rostov-on-Don launched Kalibr cruise missiles from the Mediterranean Sea to destroy facilities of the Islamic State terrorist organization in Syria.
