MOSCOW, April 18. /TASS/. More than 2,000 troops from Russia’s military base in South Ossetia will take part in exercises in the high-mountain Dzartsemi range, the press service of Russia’s Southern Military District reported on Monday.

According to the press service, about 500 units of armaments and military equipment will be involved in the drills.

"During the range exercise the troops will focus on honing their skills in using small arms and modern combat equipment - the T-72BM tanks, BMP-2 infantry fighting vehicles, Gvozdika self-propelled artillery weapons," says the report received by TASS.

Moscow recognized as independent two Georgian breakaway republics of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, which resulted in the cutoff of Russia-Georgia diplomatic ties. The recognition followed Georgia's attack on South Ossetia that entailed Russia's peacemaking operation in August 2008.
