Missile corvette joins Russian naval group in Mediterranean

The Serpukhov will replace the same type missile corvette Zelyony Dol in the group operating in the region

MOSCOW, April 1. /TASS/. Russia’s newest missile corvette organic to the Black Sea Fleet has joined the permanent task force in the Mediterranean, Black Sea Fleet spokesman, Captain 1st class Vyacheslav Trukhachyov has told TASS.

The Serpukhov will replace the same type missile corvette Zelyony Dol in the group operating in the region, Trukhachyov said.

Just as its predecessor, The Serpukhov will be on duty in the eastern part of the Mediterranean. From time to time it will enter the logistics base in Syria’s Tartus "for replenishing water, fuel and food supplies."

"The Zelyony Dol corvette will return to its permanent location in Sevastopol," Trukhachyov said.

The Serpukhov’s departure from Sevastopol was announced on Wednesday, March 30. The Zelyony Dol began its mission in the Mediterranean on February 13.

The Zelyony Dol and the Serpukhov are the fourth and fifth ships in the series of missile carrying corvettes of project 21631 (Buyan-M). They are armed with the missile system Kalibr, a 100-mm artillery piece A-190, Gibka launchers with Igla air defense missiles and the air defense artillery system AK-630-2 Duet. Both ships entered the Black Sea Fleet in 2015.
