Russian government lets FSB use part or Sea of Japan for security purposes

The Federal Security Service (former KGB) has been authorized to use two coastal facilities in the Nakhodka Bay for a period of twenty years exclusively for national defense purposes

MOSCOW, November 16. /TASS/. The Russian government has empowered the border guard department of the federal security service FSB in the Primorye Territory to use two coastal facilities in the Nakhodka Bay of the Sea of Japan (a pier on Cape Shefner and a pier on Cape Astafiev) for a period of twenty years for national defense and state security purposes. A resolution to this effect has been published on the official legal information portal.

The document says that the water areas concerned should be used "exclusively for maintaining the country’s defenses and state security." All other activities in the area, including fishing, will be prohibited. The FSB office will be responsible for keeping the hydrotechnical facilities involved in proper order and take timely measures to forestall emergencies.

Also, the government prohibited all works that may change the natural water regimen or the pollution of the water area concerned.
