Defense Ministry: Russian planes destroy command post of large Islamic State unit in Syria
The planes attacked command posts, depots and terrorist workshops
MOSCOW, October 14. /TASS/. Russian Sukhoi Su-24 bombers have destroyed the command post of a large Islamic State unit near Syria’s Deir ez-Zor, Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Major-General Igor Konashenkov told reporters on Wednesday.
"In Hama and Latakia provinces, Su-24 bombers destroyed terrorists’ ammunition depots. In the vicinity of Deir ez-Zor Su-24 bombers destroyed with an air strike the command post of a large Islamic State unit," he said.
Russian aircraft made 41 sorties and attacked 40 Islamic State targets over the past 24 hours, Konashenkov said earlier on Wednesday. The planes attacked command posts, depots and terrorist workshops.
He said the planes attacked command posts, depots and terrorist workshops in the Syrian provinces of Aleppo, Idlib, Latakia, Hama and Deir ez-Zor.
Terrorist training center destroyed in Idlib province
According to the ministry, Russian warplanes destroyed a terrorist training center in Syria's Idlib province.
"In Idlib province, SU-25SM fighter bombers have carried out a strike at the terrorist training center in the mountainous locality. Detonation of munitions stored at the facility was registered. The target was destroyed," he said, adding that all Russian aircraft returned safely to the Hmeymim airbase.
Workshops making car bombs destroyed near Aleppo
Besides that, workshops making car bombs were destroyed near Syria's Aleppo.
"Su-24M bombers delivered surgical strikes near Aleppo on the facilities where the gunmen made explosive devices and put them on the vehicles of suicide bombers," Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov said.
The vehicles were planned to be used for carrying out terrorist attacks in Syrian cities and villages and also for attacks on the positions of the Syrian army.
Russian warplanes near Aleppo have wiped out workshops where IS militants had their vehicles repaired and a base that had been running crash courses for demolition specialists.
"Air attacks were mounted 13 kilometers away from Aleppo against workshops where IS armored vehicles had been undergoing repairs and maintenance and sports utility vehicles armed with mortars, machine-guns and ZU-23 air defense systems," he said.
In the same area an IS base that ran crash courses for militants of the Islamic State has been eliminated in a surgical strike by a Sukhoi-34 jet.
IS arms, fuel depot destroyed in Syria’s Hraitan
Konashenkov also said an arms and fuel depot was destroyed near the Hraitan community in Syria.
"A Su-25SM attack aircraft delivered a strike in the area of the settlement of Hraitan against the IS terrorists’ ammunition and fuel depot. The objectives were fully destroyed by precision strikes with high-explosive bombs," the spokesman said.
All of the Russian warplanes safely returned to their Hmeimim airbase after accomplishing their combat missions, the spokesman said.
The Federation Council, the upper house of Russia’s parliament, convened on September 30 to approve Russian President Vladimir Putin’s request for the use of the country’s armed forces in Syria against the Islamic State and Jabhat an-Nusra terrorist groupings.
On the same day, Russia’s Air and Space Force started to deliver the first pinpointed air strikes against the militants’ positions. The Russian aviation grouping comprises more than 50 aircraft and helicopters, including the Sukhoi Su-34 and Su-24M bombers, Su-25 attack aircraft, Su-30SM fighters and Mil Mi-8 and Mi-24 helicopters.
