Russia develops latest Fantom camouflage cape, concealing soldier’s silhouette

MOSCOW, August 10. /TASS/. Russian specialists have developed a compact, all-season camouflage cloak called Fantom (Phantom) to reduce visibility in the thermal and visible spectrums that is capable of concealing a soldier’s silhouette, the manufacturer Zavoz.pro told TASS.
"The new Fantom camouflage cloak is designed to protect a person from detection by aerial reconnaissance systems equipped with thermal imaging cameras, night vision devices, and conventional optics. The product reduces thermal signatures without creating a pronounced cold spot and provides all-season camouflage both day and night. During the day, the outer layer of the Fantom serves as visual camouflage, which helps break up human outlines and reduce contrast against the terrain," the company explained.
The company noted that at night, the cloak’s materials minimizes light reflection and glare and pronounced contrast to prevent detection by night-vision devices. "The screening layer simultaneously helps reduce thermal signature when the enemy uses thermal imaging equipment," Zavoz.pro specified.
One of the main differences between the Fantom and previous generations of infrared cloaks is its reduced weight and compact size when folded. "The cloak weighs 900 grams. It can be carried as part of a soldier’s personal gear and quickly deployed when necessary to reduce visibility during stops, observation, movement, or while holding a position. Developing the cloak, the company sought to create a universal camouflage device that would not require separate modifications for summer and winter. The combination of materials used maintains the main functional properties over a wide temperature range," the company added.
The company also emphasized that the duration of the cloak’s use is not limited to a specific time interval, however, the actual effectiveness of the camouflage depends on ambient temperature, weather conditions, terrain, observation distance, the sensitivity of thermal imaging equipment, and a number of other factors.
"Today, protection against unmanned aerial vehicles can only be effective through a comprehensive approach. Electronic warfare, early warning, counterfire, and camouflage must complement each another," a Zavoz.pro representative said.
