MOSCOW, February 29. /TASS/. The Tsirkon (Zircon) hypersonic missile system was used during the special military operation, President Vladimir Putin said in his address to the Federal Assembly.
"The Tsirkon sea-launched hypersonic strike system has already been used in combat. It was not mentioned in the 2018 message. But this system, too, is already in service," he noted.
The Tsirkon hypersonic missile was developed and is produced in the Reutov-based NPO Mashinostroyeniya (part of the Tactical Missiles Corporation). On February 20, 2019, Putin said in his address to the Federal Assembly that the Tsirkon missile was capable of developing Mach 9 speeds and had a range of more than 1,000 km.
On August 24, 2021, at the Army-2021 military-technical forum, a contract was signed for the supply of the Tsirkon missiles to the Defense Ministry. On December 24, 2021, Putin announced a salvo launch. The tests, he said, were "successful and flawless." In the fall of 2021, it was reported that the first tests of the missile from the nuclear submarine Severodvinsk, had begun.
