Russian special services must take measures to combat bio-threats from US — Medvedev
The politician pointed out that it was necessary to form mechanisms of control over research activities in such bio-laboratories and to use international platforms for this purpose
MOSCOW, November 27. /TASS/. Russian security services should take measures to counter Washington's military-biological programs, the Deputy Chairman of Russia’s Security Council Dmitry Medvedev has said.
"The large network of US biolaboratories in post-Soviet countries poses a serious risk to our national interests. New effective measures, including through various agencies and special services should be taken in response. In turn, we will continue to pay the closest attention to the development of modern biotechnologies in Russia," he said during the first meeting of the Security Council's interdepartmental commission on countering modern threats to biosecurity.
Medvedev explained that Russia had repeatedly addressed its counterparts with proposals on this score.
"Washington continues to implement military-biological programs that are aimed at creating particularly dangerous artificial pathogens and microorganisms. In fact, it’s about obtaining components of biological weapons," he said.
Medvedev pointed out that it was necessary to form mechanisms of control over research activities in such bio-laboratories and to use international platforms for this purpose.
He drew attention to the fact that today technologically advanced states placed special emphasis on modern biological technologies.
"Indeed, sustainable economic growth directly depends on them. Special support measures and measures for the development of this industry are being developed and implemented in major countries such as the United States, China, Japan, South Korea and Israel. The European continent, of course, is also involved in this," he recounted. However, Medvedev acknowledged that such activities were not always creative or peaceful.
