Tornado-S MLRS can replace Iskander tactical missiles if latter is excessive — Rostec
Bekhan Ozdoyev noted that the Tornado-S can target both large areas, as well as individual targets via high-precision munitions
MOSCOW, November 20. /TASS/. The Tornado-S multiple launch rocket system (MLRS) can be used to destroy targets, where using Iskander tactical missiles would be excessive, due to the increased range of new munitions, says Bekhan Ozdoyev, Industria Director of the Rosctec complex of conventional weapons, munitions and special chemical compounds.
He noted that the Tornado-S can target both large areas, as well as individual targets via high-precision munitions.
"We will continue developing these systems," he assured, noting that the new guided rocket-propelled munitions have their range increased from 90 to 120 km, bringing the Tornado-S closer to tactical missile system class.
"These munitions could be used to destroy targets, where using the Iskanders would be excessive. The accuracy of the Tornado-S is very high, and the warhead’s power is enough to hit almost any, even a serious protected facility," Ozdoyev said.
The Tornado-S is a deeply modified Smerch MLRS. The improvements include munitions, communication and control devices, which led to a significant increase of range, accuracy and power of this MLRS system.
Like its predecessor, the Tornado-S has 12 rails for 300-mm rocket-propelled munitions. The system can hit targets at much greater distance than the Smerch: 120 km compared to 70-90 km.
The Tornado-S is designed for elimination of individual and area targets. It is used both for defense and offense. Each munition can receive its individual flight task and use GLONASS navigation system capabilities.
