Wolfgang Buechner underscored that German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has never conditioned shipment of German-made Leopard tanks on shipment of US-made Abrams tanks

BERLIN, February 27. /TASS/. The German government did not pressure the White House in regards to shipment of military vehicles to Ukraine, German cabinet spokesman Wolfgang Buechner said Monday, commenting on US National Security Council Advisor Jake Sullivan, who previously claimed that Washington agreed to ship Abrams tanks to Kiev against the will of the US military only because of Berlin’s position.

"I have no intention to comment on Sullivan’s interpretation or remarks," Buchner said.

According to the spokesman, the decision to ship tanks to Kiev was made in a joint agreement between Germany and the US.

"Those were good, constructive negotiations, where each side made sure to achieve a joint approach," the spokesman said.

Buechner underscored that German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has never conditioned shipment of German-made Leopard tanks on shipment of US-made Abrams tanks.

On Sunday, Sullivan presented the situation in a different light. According to the US official, the German side claimed that it is not ready to ship the Leopards to Ukraine until US President Joe Biden agrees to ship the Abrams tanks. Sullivan claimed that the US President made this step in order to preserve "the unity of the alliance."
