FSB foils IS terror plot targeting chemical facility in Russia’s Kaluga Region
"The perpetrators had pledged allegiance to the Islamic State international terrorist organization outlawed in Russia and planned to leave for the armed conflict zone in Syria after committing the crime," the FSB said
MOSCOW, February 17. /TASS/. Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) has foiled a planned terrorist attack on a chemical facility in the Kaluga Region, liquidating two supporters of the Islamic State terror group (outlawed in Russia) in the process, the FSB said in a statement on Friday.
"A terrorist attack has been foiled in the Kaluga Region, where two Central Asian natives planned to use an improvised explosive device and incendiaries to set fire to tanks containing fuel and lubricants at a chemical facility," the statement reads.
"The perpetrators had pledged allegiance to the Islamic State international terrorist organization outlawed in Russia and planned to leave for the armed conflict zone in Syria after committing the crime," the FSB added.
During their arrest, the perpetrators put up armed resistance and suffered fatal wounds from return fire. There were no casualties among law enforcement officers or civilians.
An explosives laboratory was found at the perpetrators’ clandestine residence, as well as a ready-to-use powerful homemade explosive device, petrol bombs, firearms and ammunition. A criminal case has been opened under Articles 30.1 and 205.2 of the Russian Criminal Code (preparations for a terrorist attack).
