Finnish top diplomat expects NATO entry talks to be suspended for couple of weeks
According to Pekka Haavisto, there is no need to discuss Finland’s accession to NATO without Sweden
STOCKHOLM, January 24. /TASS/. Talks between Finland, Sweden and Turkey on the two Nordic countries’ quest to join NATO are likely to be suspended for a few weeks, Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto pointed out.
"I think there will be a break for a couple of weeks," he said, as cited by Reuters.
Haavisto also specified that on January 23, he had reached an agreement with Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu that the parties would continue communicating in the same manner, but it would take some time for things to cool down.
According to Haavisto, there is no need to discuss Finland’s accession to NATO without Sweden.
Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan cautioned on Monday that Sweden should not expect Ankara's support for its NATO bid in light of the January 21 Quran-burning episode outside the Turkish Embassy in Stockholm. The Hurriyet newspaper wrote that the prospects for the Turkish legislature approving Sweden’s bid would fully depend on Stockholm’s implementation of a memorandum on combating terrorism and normalizing relations with Turkey but it could not be expected to happen before elections scheduled for May.
