Russia proposes to launch dialogue on missile control, Foreign Ministry says

Ambassador-at-Large of the Russian Foreign Ministry Grigory Mashkov announced his intention to continue work on launching an international dialogue on the missile issue

UNITED NATIONS, June 2. /TASS/. The global community is not holding serious discussions of the issue of missiles and Russia urges to launch dialogue on this subject, Ambassador-at-Large of the Russian Foreign Ministry Grigory Mashkov told journalists on Wednesday. The diplomat is participating in the UN committee on non-proliferation of nuclear, chemical and biological weapons.

"The missile issue is not given proper attention. Unfortunately, in this direction, <...> besides the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR - TASS) and the Hague Code of Conduct, there is nothing," the diplomat said. "The situation is exacerbated by the fact that there is no serious dialogue at all on this subject," he added.

"In October 2021, at a plenary session of the MTCR we proposed at least to launch this dialogue on the sidelines of the First Committee of the UN [General Assembly]," he noted, adding that work on this will continue.

The envoy pointed out that the last meeting of an expert group on missiles took place in 2008. "From this moment on, nothing serious on missiles was discussed. <...> It is necessary to begin with small steps - start the conversation," he stressed.
