NATO’s expansion to breed confrontation, and not enhance security — SCO secretary-general

The alliance was shaped in the spirit of Cold War mentality, Zhang Ming underscored

MOSCOW, May 18. /TASS/. NATO’s permanent expansion by no means enhances world security, but on the contrary breeds conflicts and confrontation, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization’s Secretary General Zhang Ming said after a meeting with CSTO Secretary-General Stanislav Zas on Wednesday.

He stressed that NATO had been shaped in the spirit of Cold War mentality.

"This way of thinking does not give us greater security. It breeds confrontation and conflicts," Zhang said.

"In my previous capacities I repeatedly held contacts with NATO officials and they were telling me that NATO would strictly observe geographic restrictions," Zhang said. He also stressed that "today’s world does not wish to see Cold War mentality" and there was no need for "expanding the Cold War toolkit".
