New Russian multiple rocket launchers can strike particular targets, says deputy PM
They possess the properties of smart weapons compared to area target weapons that were produced, Yury Borisov pointed out
MOSCOW, May 18. /TASS/. New Russian multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS) feature the properties of precision weapons and can hunt down particular targets, Deputy Prime Minister Yury Borisov said during the government’s New Horizons educational marathon on Wednesday.
"Grad, Uragan and Smerch MLRS. The new systems that are appearing as their replacement in the 122mm and 300mm calibers today possess the properties of smart weapons compared to area target weapons that were produced. In particular, each shell of 300mm weapons can be individually targeted," the deputy prime minister said.
The Smerch is a 300mm multiple launch rocket system with an operating range of 20 km to 120 km (the range of Russian-made adjustable projectiles). The system has been in service since 1987.
The Grad is a Soviet and Russian 122mm multiple launch rocket system designated to strike enemy mechanized infantry and infantry units in amassment areas, during marches and in combat formations, and also artillery and mortar batteries, air defense forces and rear facilities. The upgraded Grad MLRS dubbed the Tornado-G is in service in the Russian Army.
