Investigators open probe into tortures of captured Russian servicemen in Ukraine

The Russian servicemen were questioned about the facts of such abuses

MOSCOW, April 22. /TASS/. Russia’s Investigative Committee has opened a criminal probe into the cruel treatment of captured Russian prisoners of war (POWs) in Ukraine, the Investigative Committee’s press office reported on Friday.

"The Russian Investigative Committee’s Military Investigation Department for the Podolsk Garrison has opened a criminal case against the heads and staff of detention facilities located in the city of Kropovnitsky in the Nikolayev Region, Kiev (pre-trial detention center No. 13) and Poltava (pre-trial detention center No. 23) under Part 1 of Article 356 of Russia’s Criminal Code (‘The Use of Banned Means and Methods in an Armed Conflict’)," the statement reads.

The Russian servicemen who are now undergoing medical treatment and rehabilitation have been questioned about the facts of such abuses. Required documents have been requested from medical institutions and measures are ongoing to identify the culprits, the press office said.

Russian investigators have preliminarily established that contrary to the Convention on the Treatment of Prisoners of War, the staff of Ukrainian detention centers repeatedly abused and tortured over 20 captured Russian servicemen and also threatened their lives and health, the Investigative Committee said.
