Russian subs strike naval targets with Kalibr cruise missiles in Sea of Japan drills
While practicing their operations during the drills, the submariners overcame a notional anti-submarine barrier created by enemy forces and entered the designated area
MOSCOW, April 14. /TASS/. Two diesel-electric submarines of the Russian Pacific Fleet B-274 Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and B-603 Volkhov conducted successful launches of Kalibr cruise missiles against a naval target in the Sea of Japan drills, the Fleet’s press office reported on Thursday.
"The Pacific Fleet’s two latest diesel-electric submarines Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and Volkhov conducted launches of Kalibr cruise missiles from the submerged position against the naval target," the press office said in a statement.
The cruise missiles accurately hit the target represented by a special ship structure simulating an enemy surface combatant, it added.
While practicing their operations during the drills, the submariners overcame a notional anti-submarine barrier created by enemy forces and entered the designated area, from which they delivered a missile strike against the target position, the press office specified.
"Over 15 ships and auxiliary vessels of the Pacific Fleet and also naval aviation aircraft provided support for the fulfillment of the combat exercise," the statement says.
The Kalibr missile system has been developed and is manufactured by the Yekaterinburg-based Novator design bureau. According to the data of open sources, the system’s 3M-14 cruise missile that flies at a subsonic speed can hit targets as far away as 2,000 km. The Kalibr-PL version has been developed for submarines. The Kalibr-PL is a missile launched from a torpedo tube.
