Shipbuilders to deliver 2nd improved Yasen-class submarine to Russian Navy in 2020
The lead warship of the modernized Yasen-M Project, the nuclear-powered submarine Kazan, is currently undergoing trials
KUBINKA /Moscow Region/, March 20. /TASS/. Russia’s United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC) will deliver the second nuclear-powered submarine of the modernized Project 885M (Yasen-M) to the Navy in 2020 and the work is proceeding in accordance with the schedule, USC President Alexei Rakhmanov said on Wednesday.
"All further work is proceeding according to schedule. Series are produced better than lead ships," Rakhmanov said at a research and business conference in the Patriot Park, responding to a question about whether the first serial-produced submarine of the modernized Project 885M would be delivered to the Navy in 2020.
The lead warship of the modernized Yasen-M Project, the nuclear-powered submarine Kazan, is currently undergoing trials and the United Shipbuilding Corporation expects to deliver it to the Navy in 2019. However, the sub may not be delivered on time due to the disruption of the timeframe of its trials in 2018.
"Unfortunately, we disrupted the program of trials last year but we still have the hope that it [the Kazan] will be delivered this year," the corporation’s chief said.
The nuclear-powered submarine Kazan is the first nuclear-powered submarine of the improved Project 885M (Yasen-M). The sub was floated out on March 31, 2017. The Kazan is expected to join Russia’s Northern Fleet where the Yasen-class lead sub, the Severodvinsk, is already in service.
