Saakashvili expressed hope the United National Movement party, which had been ruling for nine years, would return to the power

TBILISI, October 21 (Itar-Tass) — Georgia’s President Mikheil Saakashvili hopes the candidate for premiership Bidzina Ivanishvili will continue Georgia’s way towards the EU and NATO.

“Together we should continue the country’s way towards the EU and NATO, as the interests of this country are above any political interests,” he told the first session of the country’s new parliament on Sunday. “This is very important for Georgia,” he added.

Saakashvili wished to the parliamentary majority, which represents the Georgian Dream coalition, the winner of the parliamentary elections, “not only not to ruin or worsen anything, but to manage to carry out the promises to improve the life.” To the parliamentary minority /the United National Movement party/ the president wished “to be constructive opposition – to agree with the government, whenever it is correct, but to be absolutely irreconcilable” in all other cases.

Saakashvili expressed hope the United National Movement party, which had been ruling for nine years, would return to the power. “In this country, changes should be a normal thing, like in the democratic European countries. Former opposition is now in Georgia’s government, and those who are the opposition now, perhaps, will come back to the power again.”

Georgia’s presidential election is due in October of 2013, the parliamentary elections – in autumn of 2016.
