MOSCOW, June 5 (Itar-Tass) — Bulgaria has made a proposal to Russia’s State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom to build an additional power unit at the Kozloduy nuclear power plant. It will be the seventh reactor at this NPP.

This statement was made to reporters on Tuesday by Rosatom Deputy Director General Kirill Komarov at the Atomexpo 2012 international forum that continues in Moscow.

“Bulgaria has made a proposal to consider our participation in the construction of the seventh power unit of the Kozloduy NPP,” he said. “In spite of Bulgaria’s refusal from building the Belene nuclear power plant, our cooperation will continue.”

Earlier, Rosatom head Sergei Kiriyenko said referring to the situation around the Bulgarian Belene NPP that “we will do everything to preserve the project,” but the Bulgarian government is currently working out a variant of the construction of one unit at the Kozloduy NPP, instead of two power units at Belene. “The customer’s desire is important for us,” Kiriyenko stressed. “If they want one unit, we are ready to carry out these works. We are now waiting for the decision and response from the Bulgarian side.”

In late March 2012, Bulgaria declared that it refuses from the construction of the Belene nuclear power plant. However, as Rosatom since 2006, when the agreement on the NPP construction was signed, has been fulfilling its obligations and one reactor has almost been built, it was decided to transfer it to the Kozloduy NPP.
